Goals so far this year...

Posted on 28/08 00:24
Since the last quarter of the year is quickly approaching, I wanted to take a look at how the goals I set at the beginning of the year

At the beginning of the year, I said I wanted to:

1. Finish remodeling and redecorating the top two floors of my house, which finally might just get done this year. (Update: Yeah, this one will get finished and with any luck the whole house will be finished by mid December)

2. Find a way to keep all of my cookbooks in the kitchen. (Update: Hasn't happened yet, but once #1 is sorted, #2 can easily happen)

3. Visit Rome and Venice this summer. (Update: We leave for Rome in two weeks and I decided to do Venice in a different trip to spend more time in Capri and the Amalfi Coast. Sadly, Venice will probaly have to wait until next year.)

4. Eat dinner at Petrus and Tom Aikens (Update: Nope, I need to pick a date and make reservations. Should be an easy one.)

5. Plan more weekend brunches and dinner parties. (Update: I've attended more brunches and dinner parties but not so much progress in the planning department)

6. Vacation in Mexico this spring (Update: Done, plus a few bonus days in San Diego)

7. Get my digitial photos out of the harddrive of my computer and into some photo albums. (Update: Nope, digital photos still a mess.)

8. Write more (Update: Fewer posts on the blog this year, but more freelance writing opportunities)

9. Take an art or writing class - (Update: Nope, nothing here)

10. Spend more weekends exploring London and the English Countryside (Update: Not as much as I would like but we did go to Canterbury last weekend)

11. Read more - aim for two books per month (Update: Sort of, I've gotten in a bit of a habit of starting books and not finishing them)

12. Plant lavender and box hedging in my garden (Update: Nope, didn't happen and will not happen this year)

13. Spend a weekend in Paris in September
(Update: We haven't planned this yet but maybe a trip to Paris in October if I can find a spare weekend and I am currently debating between booking a trip to Paris or Prague

Love Summer

Posted on 30/06 21:44

We have so much beautiful rhubarb from the garden and I am struggling to figure out what to do with it all. I was thinking up recipes on my run tonight and came up with my own version of rhubarb crumble. I'll give it another ten minutes in the oven and we will see how it turns out.

Summer is in full swing and I have been busy over the past few weeks meeting with our architect and structural engineer as our housing project swings in to full gear. I've also been sampling paint colors, lots and lots of paint colors and my walls look like a poor attempt at a patchwork quilt. Lots of travel coming up with weekend trips to Belgium and Paris in July and August and then two weeks in Italy in September. I will be back to regularly scheduled blogging soon.

Hope everyone is having a wonderful summer!

Sex & The City Movie

Posted on 29/05 23:55

After much anticipation, I saw Sex & the City Movie last night. If you haven't seen it yet, you may want to stop reading now.

First, let it me say. It was wonderful and I want more. I have never seen crowds like that before in my local cinema ever. I tried to purchase tickets last Friday for Wednesday night's opening and both the 7:30 and 9:00 showings were already sold out so I was forced to convince six friends to leave work early in order to make the 5:30 showing.

After seeing the movie, I realized how much I miss the show and how sad I am now that it is finally finished...for good. (It is finished, right? Because it would be more than ok with me if the SATC powers that be wanted to continue the series or make another movie) Because I don't want to let go. I want to know if Charlotte has more children or if Steve and Miranda manage to stay happy forever. Will they have another baby? Will Miranda ever learn to relax?

A new and surprising addition to cast was Louise (Jennifer Hudson) Carrie's personal assistant. I loved her "Louise" Vuitton. I don't watch American idol and haven't seen Dreamgirls but I love Jennifer Hudson and want to see more of her.

Am I the only one not happy about the situation with Carrie and Big? My heart hurt so much for Carrie and I couldn't believe what happened. I would NOT have been able to forgive him and I don't think he deserves Carrie. After the scene with Carrie attacking Big with the flowers, Charlotte's response was priceless. In fact, Charlotte was priceless throughout.

I was upset for Miranda too but somehow what Big did seemed so much worse. Steve was an idiot but at least he was extremely sorry. Big seemed to be so conscience of how much he was about to hurt Carrie but did it anyway.

I was happy with the way that Charlotte and Miranda's stories resolved themselves but less pleased for Samantha and Carrie. I can't say much more without giving everything away but it seems to me as Samantha is kind of without a happy ending. Doesn't she deserve love too?

Weekend Round Up

Posted on 30/03 23:20

A weekend of cleaning, errands and organization but I feel like actually got quite a few things accomplished. Ok, first things first. I had my first ever trip to Ikea this weekend. Let me just say that there is a whole art and science to shopping at Ikea that I clearly did not understand. When we first got into the store, I was so confused as to how anyone was supposed to BUY anything because everything was bolted down. We kind of got sucked into this tour where everyone follows this path through the store that seems to wind and go on forever.

I don't know what it is about these stores but it seems to bring out the worst in children because every child I saw (and they were lots of them) seemed to be either screaming or bashing things with a cart. After nearly 20 minutes of confustion and frustration, we finally figured out that we needed to go to the "Market Hall" to buy anything and I did managed to pick up a few baskets and some magazine holders. Next time if I am brave enough to go back, I will be sure to skip the tour.

Day light savings finally happened this weekend and I am so grateful. Since the US move their clocks forward almost three weeks ago, it's created lots of confusion with my US conference calls since the time difference has been one hour less than usual. It makes my life so much easier now that everything is back to normal. So feeling very spring-like this weekend, I picked up some daffodils and lavender for my garden, tested some new paint samples from Farrow & Ball and cleaned out loads of old files and folders.

Saturday night, I managed to drag my husband to 27 dresses with Katherine Heigl, which I thought was funny and heart warming--a typical romantic comedy.

I have several new posts planned for this week, but it is a short week for me because I am heading to San Diego on Thursday and then Mexico for ten days for some quality spa time, relaxation and of course, to fulfill #72 on my life list--swim with dolphins!

Lingerie Academy for Men

Posted on 20/11 23:10

Now here is an idea that I never would've thought of myself, but thinking about it now lingerie shopping must be pretty difficult for guys. John Lewis has come up with an unique idea that just might make the whole experience a little easier for guys.

On December 13 and December 20, John Lewis on Oxford Street is offering a Lingerie Academy for Men complete with leather sofas, beer and plasma tvs so that men have the opportunity to get some 1-1 advice from lingerie experts on how to buy lingerie for their wives or girlfriends.

Lesson 1 of the 'Boob Camp' consists of looking through her laundry basket or closet to figure out her bra size. Men can also get helpful tips on how to choose styles, color, etc and leave with a perfect gift wrapped and ready to go under the tree.

Home

Posted on 19/11 22:54
This is the first time in the past four weeks that I've been home for more than four days in a row. I've been to Washington DC, Baltimore, Belfast and Berlin. It's nice to back in London. The weather has noticeable shifted now and I pulled my winter coat out of storage. The rain has not stopped except for a moment since I've arrived home.

Process is moving slowly on the remodeling project and eventually I'll get around to posting pictures but I've recently been to Farrow & Ball to check out paint samples and Smallbone to look at a few kitchen models. I thought we would be finished by next June, but slowly I am beginning to think that this project may slip into the fall.

I have many cute new finds to report from my travels and hopefully I'll get around to blogging about them soon. I should be back to blogging regularly from now until just before X-mas but I have many things to do in England before then...tickets to the NutCracker at the Royal Opera House, a course in holiday floral design, day trip to Chewton Glen, holiday parties, etc.
