Chick Lit: Remember Me

Posted on 18/02 17:24

Fans of Sophie Kinsella will be delighted to hear that her newest book "Remember Me" has just come out.

Lexi is involved in a car accident and wakes up 3 years later with amnesia only to discover that everything in her life has changed for the better. Her clothes, loft, husband and friends are now all very glamorous.

Lexi tries to put the pieces together to better understand who she is and how things got this way. Along the way, she discovers schemes, secrets and one huge bombsell.

In classic Kinsella style, here is yet another smart, witty and decidedly funny winner.

Eat Pray Love

Posted on 09/05 20:14

I picked up Eat Pray Love over the weekend and I have been barely able to put it down. Elizabeth Gilbert was a 30 something freelance writer, living in New York and going through a painful divorce. She decides to embark on a 1 year long journey of which she spends 4 months in Italy, 4 months in India and 4 months in Bali.

She goes to Italy in search of pleasure and spends the majority of her day engaging in conversation and eating fabulous food. In India, she goes in search of prayer and spirituality and in Bali, she tries to find a balance of the two.

I can see a little bit of Gilbert in myself. After college, I spent a year traveling and working in Taiwan. I thought I might spend a year in Taiwan, another in Thailand and maybe one more year abroad in Vietnam or China, but after 2 typhoons, a flood and 3 earthquakes in Taiwan, I was ready to come home.

I love Gilbert’s humor and her writing style. She evokes images that take her reader along for the journey, which makes me so excited to go to Italy next month because she made me feel like I was already there.

Shopaholic and Baby

I adore Sopie Kinsella and I am so excited to FINALLY get my hands on a copy of her newest book.

I think I was just about the last person in London to purchase a copy because I keep seeing this book EVERYWHERE and everyone (well, all proud chick lit fans anyway) seems to be talking about it.

I am trying to stop myself from reading this book so I can save it for my trip to the US next week, but who am I kidding? I don't read on planes. I catch up on six months of movies in one sitting like everyone else.

Chick Lit: Wife in the Fast Lane

Posted on 29/12 00:49
I really do try to reserve chick lit for the summer, but I really want to start reading this book and I think I deserve a light holiday break read, right?. I haven't read this yet, but the main character is a former Olympic athlete turned business owner who marries a entertainment mogul. If it's half as funny as "The Ivy Chronicles," I am sure I'll love it.

Besides, I am going to make better use of the I-Pod with my subscription to audible.com. Call me a dork, but I want to make better use of my time traveling to, from and for work.

The Ivy Chronicles

Posted on 10/09 21:37
Ivy Ames is a high powered executive with a Park Avenue lifestyle to match. She soon loses her job, discovers her husband's having an affair and has to sell her Park Avenue pad to move to the Lower East Side.

She is rejected by her former social circle and tries to pull her life together by becoming a kindergarten admissions advisor. You'll laugh and be amused by the demands of Ivy's clients and her desperate attempts to satisfy them all.

Another great beach read! I am sad to say that since summer is just about over, I am going to take a break from the chick lit to do a little heavier reading.

Good in Bed

Posted on 15/07 15:44
Jennifer Weiner's first novel Good in Bed is fabulously funny. I think all twenty something women can relate to Cannie Shapiro's struggles with relationships gone wrong, chasing the wrong guy and body image.

The book is a little predictable, but then again, isn't all chick lit?. Who honestly didn't see the relationship with Dr. K coming from about a mile away? I would've also liked a little more of a resolution as to what actually happens with Bruce? Does he see his daughter...ever?

Jennifer Weiner kept my laughing and entertained. I read this book in about two days and I had a hard time putting it down because I kept wanting to see what would happen next. This is a light hearted, funny read that is perfect for summer.

Light & Lovely - The Undomestic Goddess

Posted on 25/05 15:02
I just finished The Undomestic Goddess by Sophie Kinsella. If you follow the Shopaholic series, you’ll be delighted to know that Kinsella has created another winner. Samantha Sweeting, a overworked lawyer on the verge of making partner, escapes to the country after she fears she made a terrible mistake costing her firm millions.

In the English countryside, she ends up on the door of a stately home where the owner mistakes her as one of the applicants for a housekeeping position. You can see where this is going, right? Samantha is hired despite the fact that she can’t clean, cook, or iron even though the owners, Eddie and Trish, believe she has plenty of experience and is trained as a world class chef.

The gardener, Nathaniel, soon realises that Samantha is not who she says and both he and his mother come to her rescue teaching her all the inns and outs as to how to run a household. Not surprisingly, love blossoms between Nathaniel and Samantha further complicating the situation as Samantha will eventually be forced to choose between Nathaniel and her old life as a lawyer.

If you're looking for faults, trust me, they're there. My advice: Don’t analyse the book, just accept it for what it is…a light and lovely romantic comedy that is sure to make you laugh out loud!

The Secret Life of Bees

Posted on 21/05 17:26
Why is it that every woman that I know seems to rave about The Secret Life of Bees? On one hand, it is compelling story that takes a poignant look at racism through the eyes of a fourteen year old child. On the other hand, the sentimentality is almost choking at times.

Monk strives to make the protagonist, Lily Owens, capture your heart, but when I put down the book, I put down Lily Owens as well. I like characters that get under my skin and keep me awake at night, but so much of this book was unrealistic and over-romanticized that I found it difficult to delve below the surface.

The highlight for me was the bee factoids, which prefaced each chapter, illustrating how bees act as a metaphor for life. I thought this was an incredibly interesting and original look at the lives of bees. Overall, it’s a lighthearted and inventive story that, despite its flaws, is a worthy read.
